So Many for Auto Insurance

For all the hundreds of millions of dollars companies spend advertising their car insurance policies, they're not getting a very high conversion rate.

According to a new study from J.D. Power and Associates, auto insurance companies on average are successfully signing only 2% of all shoppers. For the most part, the companies lose prospective customers before even offering them a quote, says Jeremy Bowler, senior director of the insurance practice.

"It's a good thing the industry has a phenomenal policy retention rate," Bowler says.

The reasons many people don't request a quote are varied, Bowler says. Some consumers are put off by a company's lack of bundling options (i.e., the ability to have home and auto insurance through one company), while others have received negative word of mouth about a company from friends or family. Or, the process involved to get a quote may be too cumbersome. "Some companies are rooted to traditional sales processes," Bowler says. "That's sort of an inhibitor; you're making it hard to get a quote."

According to the survey of nearly 8,500 people, 36% of auto insurance customers have actively shopped for a new insurer in the past year. When asked about various companies, 38% of those shoppers didn't recognize many of the country's 26 largest auto insurers, and an additional 39% don't care about the brands.

"What's left is a group of people who have strong feelings about certain companies, and some of those are negative," Bowlers says. After eliminating the 6% of shoppers who said they would avoid certain insurance companies, the pool of prospective customers is down to 18% of auto insurance shoppers, he says.

Of those 18% who might be willing to switch, only 10% ask for a quote (and only half of them make the switch), Bowler says. With many insurance companies gathering most of their personal data through the quote process, insurance companies are leaving a lot of leads unfollowed up on, Bowler says. "[Insurance companies] spend all this money advertising to get people to come to the door and they only follow up if the customer's filled out an application," Bowler says. "Insurance companies have no way to measure how many more prospects escaped earlier in the shopping process - whether they were driven away by a cumbersome quote process, a non-responsive agency or misconceptions about price or service quality."

The study found that many people (60%) are researching insurance policies online, though the channel loses more customers than traditional in-person or phone channels. Only 20% of Internet sales are closed successfully vs. 52% of traditional channels, Bowler says.

However, one tactic has been very successful online: offering quotes for other competitors. According to Bowler, one-in-three shoppers who get a competitive quote from a car insurance company don't bother to follow up to see if that quote is accurate. "If the ambition is to head people off [before researching a competitor], they seem to be hugely successful," Bowler says.

Automotive Insurance Industri

There is no other industry that feels the effects of microbial contamination in buildings like the insurance industry. With litigation over mold into the millions of dollars the insurance industry is scrambling looking for answers. This page is written by Al Tibbs, CIAQM a professional IAQ Consultant and Construction Inspector working in the private sector as a consultant to home and building owners.

From my perspective the first problem that should be addressed is the timeliness in which water damage claims are dealt with. In many cases, I am hired by a home or building owner that is waiting to hear word from their insurance company on a water damage claim. When the adjuster does make it to the site, which, in some cases is days later, the damage may already be done. Adjusters need to be aware of the time factors involved in microbial contamination. Studies have shown that microbial contamination can begin in as little as 24-48 hours after an initial flood, whether from sewer backup, roof leak, pipe break or any other factor. I believe that in the past, adjusters have been concerned with limiting the losses to the insurer only. Today, with toxic mold litigation on the rise, that may not be the best solution. It may be prudent for insurers to deal more openly with microbial contamination after a flood or water damage claim is filed.

In a recent case, I was working for a homeowner that had an unfortunate pipe break at their incoming water service. The ensuing leak caused damage to the walls, carpet, etc. There was plainly visible microbial contamination on the drywall in the area of the leak. In this case, the adjuster told my client not to worry, that the black stains were not mold, but dirt. I was forced to take surface samples of the area (adding another week to the timeline) to prove that plainly visible mold, was indeed, mold. The added time, waiting for sample results only made matters worse. Given the right conditions, that few extra days could increase the cost of the cleanup substantially.

In the case mentioned above, after finally accepting that the visible growth on the walls was indeed fungi, the insurer sent in a cleanup contractor to secure the area and prevent further contamination. The contractor set up an enclosure to contain the area, along with a negative pressure exhaust to the exterior of the building. Unfortunately, the contractor did not take the time to secure the exhaust from the negative pressure equipment and it fell out and into the room, agitating the air and most likely blowing spores throughout the home.

The above scenario shows one thing. Insurers and those working for them need to be more aware of potential longer term costs and not concentrate solely on reducing claim costs. In cases where microbial contamination is suspected, insurers should use companies that are experienced in microbial abatement procedures to secure the area and limit further contamination and to assure that the situation is being handled properly. Not doing so only increases the insurers costs.

The companies contracted to perform the initial containment and remediation should be experienced abatement contractors, not cleaning companies. Some cleanup companies are unaware of microbial contamination and look at it contamination as no big deal. This is proving to be costly for insurers.

BP Lobbied for release of the Lockerbie Bomber

I understand BP is in the business of finding, Drilling for, then selling oil. I do recognize that there are some inherent dangers surrounding the Oil and Gas industries. I wish I could say that we were at a point where we no longer depended on the use of fossil fuels- the sad truth is the World is still addicted to oil.Stick a solar panel on your SUV and see if your able to drive your children to school. More and more it is becoming clear that the "Easy-to-get-to-oil" has been accounted for, resulting in the need to pull fossil fuels out of ever more challenging locations. So with that in mind I will cut British Petroleum a bit of slack at having the occasional accident.

The question is, with the well know dangers and hazards associated with Deep-Water- drilling did BP take "Reasonable Precautions" and have a workable plan to deal with the after-math of the inevitable spill? The simple answer is NO.

Not only did BP not have a plausible plan of action, they demonstrated that their upper-management was filled with Tone-Def, Yacht owners. With Millions of gallons of oil washing into some of our country's most delicate wet-lands; you would think it would be gars to do anything to further damage your company's reputation- WELL THINK AGAIN........

BP confirmed today that it had lobbied the British government in late 2007 for release of the Lockerbie Bomber. For those handful of people that have forgotten; The terrorist attack on Pan Am's Flight 103 took place on Wednesday 21 December 1988. The plane was on flying from London to New York when it was destroyed by an on-board bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members plus 11 more people on the ground in Lockerbie, Scotland, in total 270 innocent lives were lost.
I understand that at times it can be difficult for large corporations to take political stands on various issues; but being on the "OPPOSIT-SIDE of a mass-murdering-Terrorist should be a rather easy public relations move.

The British Petroleum said it had "Voiced concerns that the slow pace of negotiations risked impeding an offshore drilling deal with Moammar Gadhafi's Libya. Just when I thought BP corporate image could not get any worse; I find that they have dug a Public Relations hole deeper than any off-shore well. And by the way- no "Relief - Well" is going to help cap this disaster.

Transformers in Chicago

A long time ago, and far from Chicago, the planet of Cybertron, was home to a war between the "Autobots" and the Decepticons over control of a talisman called "Allspark." In an attempt to protect "Allspark" from falling into the hands Megatron, leader of the Decepticons; Optimus Prime (leader of the Autobots) hid it here on earth.

From what I can gather the movie has something to do with all these giant transforming robots waging some kind of explosive battle here on Earth, while every male in the audience focused on Megan Fox.

Well, it appears that the battle has come to the "Chicago Loop."

This past weekend, most of the streets of heart of Chicago's financial district had been taken-over by these robots, or at least by DreamWorks SKG. Streets were littered with what looked like massive pieces of falling debris, massive gapping holes, burnt abandoned cars, in other-words- it looked more like the West-Side of Chicago.

In answer to your question; as an Insurance Agent specializing in Car Insurance; Acts of War are not covered under your Auto Insurance policy - while never tested court, I assume that includes war brought to Earth from an other planet.

I'm not sure what plot turns were used to bring the war to the streets of Chicago, but I am sure that the Chicago's budget will benefit from the large checks the movie studio is witting. In fact, I think Mayor Daley would be well advised to steal this "Allspark" Talisman, keep it hidden forcing the battle to continue along with the seven figure checks from DreamWorks.

Mad As Hell

With The War in Afghanistan raging since October 7, 2001, and the Iraq War, ongoing from March 20, 2003, It is easy to understand American's ever increasing feeling we are stuck in an ever deepening and costly quagmire.

While the Bank closings and collapse of the "Sub-Prime" markets never brought us to the depths of the "Depression," there is a sense that the "New-Normal" is dreary at best. Yes, we have improved greatly from the numbers at the end of the Bush administration when we were loosing 400,000 - 750,000 jobs per month- in fact we have seen jobs growth. What we have not seen is any truly bright light at the end of the tunnel.

As a result of years of deregulation, we now wake up each morning to hear about another 50,000 plus barrels of oil pouring into the Gulf, destroying some of American's most delicate wet-lands.

Our Local Governments are broke, Schools are being forced to increase class sizes to 35 despite clear data showing the negative effect such changes will have on our students.Roads have potholes large enough to swallow a dog and many of our bridges seem held up by rust and duck tape.

It is with this in mind that a new Washington Post/ABC News poll finds that 57% of Americans state they have "just some" or no confidence in President Obama ability to make the right decisions for America. Before the opposition "Licks it's chops," they better read that 73 percent had just some or no confidence in congressional Republicans to make the right decisions for the country..

We are Mad as Hell- But we don't have the slightest idea WHO to be mad at!

Fiscal conservatives are angry at what they see as an exploding deficit for which they will lay blame at Obama's feet, while the smartest of them recognize that the previous Republican showed a complete lake of fiscal discipline. Liberals who invested an allegiance in Obama that one often reserves for saints; have found him unable to bring forth the Utopian dreams his cadency promised. And the "Tea-Bag- People" seem somehow irate to find that we are no longer living in the 19th century.

The hard to face truth is that America faces some difficult challenges. While common sense tells us that our greatest hope of setting our country back on tracks is for Democrats and Republicans to work together for a common good; the current political climate makes such self-sacrifice beyond hope.

How You Can Drive Safely In The Snow

How You Can Drive Safely In The Snow!

cars-in-snow1

Personally, I think that driving in the snow is one of the most stressful things in the world. Not only do you have to deal with people not paying attention but you really have to make sure that you are focused on exactly where your car might be turning or fishtailing. There is a way though that you can drive safely in your car in the snow – and that is what we are going to talk about.

Driving in the snow is all about how well you pay attention. To be perfectly honest, one of the main things that you have to remember whenever you are driving around in the snow is that you need to pay attention.

What this means is that you need to limit or eliminate all of the distractions in your car – which I can promise you have a lot of them in there.

Drivers that spell disaster on the road

Drivers that spell disaster on the road

p57 bad driversYou might be very careful when driving but you just can not avoid an encounter with other motorists that can drive you mad.

There will be people who will have their blinkers on for several miles. There will be drivers who will overtake your vehicle, then slow down, and go fast, and slow down again. Drivers like these are really aggravating. Instinct will tell you that you want to let them know what is in your mind (or sometimes your hand). Before you do anything, think twice, not that they will do anything but they can be dangerous.

Telephone Game

What can be more dangerous on the road than someone busy chatting over the cellphone or even worse texting someone. As much as you are tempted to go fast and pass them, the recommended move will be to keep your distance. A big percentage of accidents on the road are due to drivers distracted in one form or another.

Late Blinker

You are about to take a right turn but decided to wait since a car is cruising down the road. You wait for a while. And waited for a bit more just to find out that when he is just about to turn, he flicks on his signal light and turns on the same street you are going to. If this happened to you most of the time, then you are making the right decision of waiting and respecting right of way.
